Sustainable Procurement Barometer 2026: 6 Signals Every Buyer Needs to Know

Sustainable procurement has moved past pilot programs. According to the Sustainable Procurement Barometer 2026, 81% of procurement leaders now say ESG factors matter in purchasing decisions. Yet, 85% also say finding sustainable suppliers is difficult. That gap between intent and execution is where the real signal is.

Below are six shifts from the data that matter specifically for buyers and procurement leaders.

Why Buyers Are Watching This Data Closely

Procurement teams have historically treated sustainability as a compliance checkbox layered onto sourcing decisions. That’s changing. As global regulations like the EU’s CSRD and CSDDD, California’s SB 253, China’s new climate disclosure rules expand, buyers are under growing pressure to prove that their supply chains meet rising standards. At the same time, internal stakeholders are asking procurement teams to make a business case for sustainability. The data below reflects both pressures at once.

1. Benchmarking Is Now a Selection Criterion

Buyers are increasingly using the Scope 3 data they already collect to compare suppliers against industry peers. This shift means that, alongside a supplier’s year-over-year progress, its standing relative to competitors is starting to influence sourcing and retention decisions.

2. The Reporting Gap Is a Growing Blind Spot

Despite tightening regulatory demands, 30% of suppliers still provide no primary emissions data to their buyers. Decision-grade Scope 1, 2, and 3 data is quickly becoming the differentiator between suppliers who win renewed business and suppliers who don’t.

3. AI Screening Is Already Live

68% of buyers report they are operationally deploying AI tools to screen suppliers and validate sustainability data. These systems evaluate documented, verified evidence, meaning a supplier’s real-world practices only count if they’re recorded somewhere the system can see.

4. Sustainability Scorecards Are Merging With Procurement Scorecards

ESG performance is increasingly assessed alongside cost, quality, and delivery, not as a separate track. Buyers embedding sustainability intelligence directly into sourcing and supplier management are moving faster than those running it as a parallel process.

5. The ROI Conversation Has Shifted

Buyers securing internal investment are framing sustainability around risk reduction, cost savings, and revenue growth rather than compliance alone. As Christophe Quiquempoix, VP of Sustainable Procurement at Schneider Electric, put it: “Sustainability is about doing the same, or more, with less. That’s the ROI story suppliers can act on.”

6. Third-Party Ratings Are the Scaling Mechanism

25% of buyers now cover more than half of their total spend using third-party ESG ratings and platforms. It’s a two-way benefit: 80% of suppliers say sharing validated ratings has improved customer relationships, and 54% report a stronger brand reputation as a result.
